Coin and Paper Money Collecting/what to do?
Expert: PAPAJACK - 3/9/2009
Question
i have recently inherited a whole slew of US coins from 1887, 1893, 1896, 1906, the 20s through the 2000s...and many many more from the 60s royal mint, and bahamian coins labeled extremely rare from 1968...etc...my question is where or to whom can i sell them? and please, don't take any offense to my obvious lack of coin or historic knowledge.
AnswerHello Nathalie,
Any coin dealer will usually buy part or the entire collection.
The difference is for what price! Most will offer you the price for the value of silver or gold it contains.
Others will sort through the coins looking for the rarest dates, or most highly preserved specimens.
Only by sorting through and attributing the coins and looking at a few lists can you be comfortable with the price you may get selling them.
If you have a desire to spend a little time looking through your coins you can better decide how to dispose of them. You may be better off getting a price for the entire lot of coins and selling them all at once.
Many collectors will sell off the more common coins at first and keep the valuable ones till the market is hot to sell them at the best price.
You can write me again for more information if you decide to do this.
Another method would be a coin show, the larger the show the better for liquidating your coins at one stop.
Many dealers cannot hold a large inventory of coins. They need to stock what will sell in the near future just as all commerce operates.
A smaller local coin club show will be okay but they might not take all your coins.
And lastly you can go to three or more dealers with the coins getting offers and deciding which the best is for you.
If you write back with the general location (nearest large cities) and telephone area code or codes and some zip codes in your area, I can direct you to an AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION MEMBER/DEALER near there. They are ethical and trustworthy.
I hope this information is helpful.
Feel free to ask another question about US Coins.
Good Luck,
