Question I found a silver coin dated 1882 in my grandmother's coin collection. The front appears to be a Morgan dollar because it has the liberty head with "E Pluribus Unim" and the date. But the back of this coin simply has the letters F Mc K. Can you tell me what it is? Thank you.
Answer Beth,
You have what's known as a love token. Somebody took a Morgan dollar, ground off the back, then added the lettering. It was popular to give these as gifts about 100 years ago, but it is rare to find one on a Morgan dollar -- usually they used smaller denomination coins like dimes.
Considering the rarity, it's value is likely as much as $100 or more. Similar items have been selling on eBay in the $115 to $150 range. If you go there and do a search on "love token dollar", then go to the comleted listings section, you can see the results for auctions of similar items.
