Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1886 Morgan Silver Dollar with no mint mark

Question
Hi Dan; I have read through your past responses and only found one that addressed a Morgan Silver Dollar missing min marks. I have a 1886 MSD in very fine or better uncirculated condition that appears to have no mint mark. Is this a legitimate possibility? or is it possibly a Chinese counterfit? How much would you say its worth?

Answer
Michael,

All Morgan dollars minted at the main mint in Philadelphia will not have a mint mark -- only the branch mints (Denver, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City) got mintmarks back then.  In fact, most years the mintage at the Philadelphia mint was the highest of all the mints, making them the most common.

1886 with no mintmark is considered one of the more common dates.  In circulated condition its worth about $12.00

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
