Question
First thank you for this forum and for your time. I have
collected coins since I was a young child, throw them in a
shoe box, and in later life in a safe.  Looking at them and
never knowing the value or exactly what I have.  I came
across 2 1943 Nickels that are stripped and  peeling, like
they were kicked out of the printing press.  I have had
them forever and am wondering if their uniqueness is of
value

Hi Tony,

This is called a lamination error.  It is very common among war nickels because of the different metals used to produce the coin.  The U.S. Mint had difficulties in the annealing process and many blanks split and came apart during production.  A 600 ton press will force a break in the metal if the blank isn't perfect and presto an error coin is produced.  At the end of the day it is a very interesting novelty item with no real collector value, but it does have a great story!  

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
