Coin and Paper Money Collecting/American Express Edition

Question
My husband came across a coin collection of his grandfathers.  We were wondering if they were worth anything. There are 36 coins binded in a navy blue book with the words "The Franklin Mint Treasury of Presidential Commemorative Medals" and "***American Express Edition***" on the side.  The first coin starts with George Washington and the last coin ends with Richard Nixon and the rest are all the former presidents in between.  Can you help us?

Answer
Ashley,

This is a set of privately minted medals, made by the Franklin Mint Company (a private company) back in the 1970's.

You will need to find either markings on the medals, or some kind of certificate, to determine if they contain any silver.  Most likely they will be Sterling (which is 92.5% silver).  Then weigh the medals, calculate the total weight in Troy ounces, convert to pure silver, and multiply by the current spot price of a Troy ounce of silver.

You can see current silver spot prices here :

This will give you a good estimate of the value of your set.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
