About Dan Moore
Expertise
My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience
I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.

Organizations I belong to :
American Numismatic Association Member #187770
Michigan State Numismatic Society Member #8255
Florida United Numismatics Member #19710
Monroe Coin Club Treasurer
Lincoln Coin Club Board Member

Coin Collecting - Coin collection

Expert: Dan Moore - 4/23/2009

Question
Hi Dan,
I inherited a fairly large coin collection. I know next to nothing about thier
value etc. Most are US coins but quite a few foriegn coins as well. There are
way to many to list but I can give you some examples.
Ben Franklin half dollars dated 1950's - 60's. Susan B Anthony half dollars
dated 1930's - early 40's. Mercury head dimes 1916 - 1945, Washington
head quarters 1932 - 1945,  Jefferson nickels 1938 - 1961, Lincoln head sets
1909 - 1940. Also some buffalo head coins, canadian coins, mexico coins
and other foriegn.

My question:
Where can I go locally to get an "HONEST" appraisal of thier value and quality
ect. I dont know wether to keep them as a long term investment or is this a
Good Time to part with them due to the economy issues.
I live in the Phoenix Az metropolitan area if that will help you with suggesting
who I should contact in my area locally.

I "appreciate" your time and advice !!!!
Ron

Answer
Ron,

Not being from the Phoenix area, I don't have a specific person I can refer you to.  All I can do is suggest you either take the coins to a local coin show and have a couple dealers look at them, or try one or two Phoenix area dealers listed on the ANA's website.

Coin show listings :
www.coinshows.com
www.coinworld.com

Coin dealer listings :

Generally speaking, the only thing from your list -- if you have it -- that you should consider hanging on to, would be a 1916-D Mercury Dime or a 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent.  These two coins would have the best chance of gaining value.  The rest you may as well sell at the current silver/gold prices.

I hope this helps,

Dan
