Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Inherited coin collection

Question
Hello Troy,
I inherited a fairly large coin collection. I know next to nothing about thier
value etc. Most are US coins but quite a few foriegn coins as well. There are
way to many to list but I can give you some examples.
Ben Franklin half dollars dated 1950's - 60's. Susan B Anthony half dollars
dated 1930's - early 40's. Mercury head dimes 1916 - 1945, Washington
head quarters 1932 - 1945,  Jefferson nickels 1938 - 1961, Lincoln head sets
1909 - 1940. Also some buffalo head coins, canadian coins, mexico coins
and other foriegn.

My question:
Where can I go locally to get an "HONEST" appraisal of thier value and quality
ect. I dont know wether to keep them as a long term investment or is this a
Good Time to part with them due to the economy issues.
I live in the Phoenix Az metropolitan area if that will help you with suggesting
who I should contact in my area locally.

Thanks for your time and advice !!!!
Ron

Answer
Hi Ron,

It sounds like you inherited an accumulation of coins (coins collected from change).  Rare coins will normally have a receipt from being purchased from a coin dealer or will be separately packaged as something special.  Basically, from experience there is a slim chance you have any super stars in your collection - but you never know!

I am sure there are many fine dealers in your area.  I have done business with Arizona Coin & Jewelry, 1804 W. Camelback Raod, Phoenix AZ  85015   (602) 588-9538.  They are good people.  I hope this helps.

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.

If you found this information helpful please nominate me for category expert in coins.  If coming through Los Banos, CA please feel free to look us up at Thoreson Numismatics.

Thanks for the question,
