Coin and Paper Money Collecting/State Pennies

Question
While moving into my new house, I came across a box with my name on it.  Upon opening it up, I saw a plaque-like item with 50 1975 pennies each with a different State outline stamped into them, with the states initials inside the outline.  Did I come across something rare, or was this a common item made for just about anyone to acquire?

Answer
David,

That is a relatively common novelty item, made after the coins left the mint by stamping each with the state outlines.  These were usually then attached to some kind of display board.

I've seen these sell in the past for about $20 if attached to a nice display board, or $5 to $10 if not.

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
