Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Worth of sterling silver medals

Question
My father died recently and left the following:  "1 Set of Franklin Mint Treasury of Presidential Commemorative Medals, 35 Sterling Silver Medals with Album."  He purchased it in 1968.  A couple of the coins look a little tarnished but I don't think they have ever been taken out of the album.  Can you tell me the approximate worth?

Answer
Linda,

While your father most likely paid alot more for them, unfortunately there is almost no resale market for these, other than for the silver they contain.

I don't know the weight of these medals, so to figure out their value, you will need to take one out of the album, and weigh it in Troy ounces (maybe take it to a jeweler to do this).  Then take this number and multiply by 0.925 to convert from Sterling to pure silver.  Then take this number and multiply by the current spot price for silver (viewable at www.kitco.com).  This will give you the current silver melt value for each medal.  Multiply by 35 for the whole set.  This should give you the price you could expect to get (within a few dollars) from any coin dealer.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
