Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1922 Peace dollar

Question
before my father passed away he showed my his 1922 peace dollar.  He was given it by Mr. Hearst when he retired from the San Francisco Chronicle news paper. It's a bit tarnished around the edges but in good shape.  He was told that it may be worth several thousands. What do you think? I haven't brought it anywhere yet and I have had it for over a year.

Answer
Hi Donna,

This is very interesting.  99.9999% of all 1922 Silver Dollars are worth in the $12 range.  So, don't get your hopes up to high. It is possible you have a rare high relief presentation piece that was minted in very low numbers.   If you have a good digital camera or better yet a flat bed scanner, you'll need to reply with images of the front and back.  This will help me determine if you have something valuable.

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Hold your coin on its edge only!   Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
