Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1926-D Peace Siver dollar

Question
I recently inherited a large silver dollar collection from my mother. I purchased the RED BOOK and discovered that one coin I have a 1926-D Peace Silver dollar has a matted finish. In the Red Book it said that a few were issued in 1921 and 1922. Could you tell me if I might have something unusual? Thank you and I await your reply.

Answer
Hi Nancy,

It takes years of experience to determine a matte finish on Peace Dollar.  The 1926-D would not have been produced with such a surface.  If you family lived in Denver in the 1920's then everything would need to be checked out by a professional.  The 1921 and 1922 Matte Proof coins are very rare.  Look for receipts from coin dealers and purchases of rare coins. We find most rare coins will have been purchased from coin dealers in the past.  If any of the above applies you might consider joining the PCGS or NGC collectors club.  They can offer you third party grading and authentication services for a fee.

Most coins found in the Red Book are represented by pricing in the first two columns.  If your coin collection was collected from circulation (not purchased from a coin dealer) then chances are the coins are common.  You might have original never used rolls of Morgan or Peace dollars and that's a good thing.  The 1921 Morgan Dollar is also common.  In general, 1921 Morgan Dollars, 1922-1926 Peace Dollars are going to be liquid at around $12.00 each and up.  Pre 1905 Dollars will be worth $14.00 and up.

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
