About Dan Moore
Expertise
My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience
I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.

Organizations I belong to :
American Numismatic Association Member #187770
Michigan State Numismatic Society Member #8255
Florida United Numismatics Member #19710
Monroe Coin Club Treasurer
Lincoln Coin Club Board Member

Coin Collecting - 1928 Peace Dollar

Expert: Dan Moore - 5/24/2009

Question
I have recently acquired a 1928 Peace Dollar from my uncle's estate.  I do not see any type of letter by the eagle's tail, so I'm assuming it possibly could be from Philadelphia?  How can I tell what kind I have and how much is it worth?  Also, how can I tell if it's been uncirculated/circulated?  Thank you!

Answer
Tami,

On 1928 dollars, there will either be an "S" mintmark on the back (below the word ONE), or there will be nothing.

Here is a picture showing an "S" mintmark :

With the "S", it's from San Francisco -- without the "S", it's from Philadelphia.

Uncirculated means the coin has never been put out into circulation -- it has no visible wear on it -- it has all the original design details and mint luster.

Circulated means the coin has visible wear from being passed between people and businesses.

If it has no mintmark ...
In circulated condition, it's worth $300-$350
In uncirculated condition, it's worth $400-$750 or more

If it has the "S" mintmark ...
In circulated condition, it's worth $20-$30
In uncirculated condition, it's worth $100-$400 or more

Exact value is determined by exact grading -- done by an expert.

I suggest you find a coin show in your area and take the coin there to be examined by at least 3 different dealers, to get their opinion on what grade it is.  Then you can look it up on a price guide to see its value.

I hope this helps,
