About Dan Moore
Expertise
My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience
I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.

Organizations I belong to :
American Numismatic Association Member #187770
Michigan State Numismatic Society Member #8255
Florida United Numismatics Member #19710
Monroe Coin Club Treasurer
Lincoln Coin Club Board Member

Coin Collecting - 1988 Quarter

Expert: Dan Moore - 5/25/2009

Question
I have a mis print or mis stamped 1988 quarter. It has a rounded copper edge on
the rim with no ridges. It also is a little bit smaller than other quarters.
Have you ever seen this?

Answer
Michael,

Without seeing it, I would have to think you have an altered coin.

For it to be a genuine error, with a copper outer edge, and smaller than a regular quarter, it would have to have been struck on a dime blank -- making it ALOT smaller and thinner than a regular quarter, which does not sound like the case.  It can't be struck on a nickel blank because it would not have the copper edge.

Don't get your hopes up, but you can try taking it to a local coin show and showing it to a few dealers to get their first-hand opinions.  Try checking the following websites for listings of coin shows in your area :

www.coinshows.com

www.coinworld.com

I hope this helps,

Dan
