Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1992 d quarter with possible CUD
Expert: PAPAJACK - 5/23/2009
Question
I found this quarter at work and it has a raised bump under the nose. The bump is large and includes the chin area. I was told that it could be a CUD. Is this a CUD and is the coin of any value more than $.25?
AnswerHello Christina,
I must say I am not an error coin collector.
Error collecting is a branch outside of coins collecting. There is no fixed pricing on these error coins published and each one would have to be seen to be evaluated.
This seems more like a lamination error. Where the nickel clad layer is bulging on one side. It would have to be seen to be evaluated. Or it may be an altered coin (I have seen a similiar blemish caused by heat). The Cuds are usually on the edge of the coins where the die can easily break and leave a raised blob looking defect.
If Authentic it may get $5 or so depending on the features that are still visible on the coin. It is good that yours still has the date and mint mark showing I know this makes it more desirable to error coin collectors.
I also want to mention COMBINED ORGANIZATION of NUMISMATIC ERROR COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION; they are the ultimate experts in the error coin field. Go to
http://conecaonline.org/
CONECA is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mint marks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers just to name a few.
