About Dan Moore
Expertise
My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience
I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.

Coin Collecting - 1997 american eagle 3 coin set in wood box

Expert: Dan Moore - 5/22/2009

Question
I have a 1997 American Eagle Impressions of liberty 3 coin set in a wood box wither letter of certifacte, it is one of 5000 that was sold out in June of 1997, $1499. What is todays value.

Answer
Jim,

That set was put together by a private company -- not sure which one exactly -- but their goal was to extract way too much money for a set of coins in a fancy package.  So I fear that $1499 in 1997 was a huge overpayment for what's in the set at the gold/silver/platinum price levels in 1997.

I don't know exactly what's in the set, but here are current values of the possible pieces that set contains :

$1 Silver -- UNC $16 -- PROOF $65
$5 Gold -- UNC $95 -- PROOF $130
$10 Gold -- UNC $240 -- PROOF $330
$25 Gold -- UNC $470 -- PROOF $650
$50 Gold -- UNC $900 -- PROOF $1300
$10 Platinum -- UNC $120 -- PROOF $140
$25 Platinum -- UNC $320 -- PROOF $340
$50 Platinum -- UNC $630 -- PROOF $730
$100 Platinum -- UNC $1200 -- PROOF $1300

Determine which coins you have in the set, add up the current values listed above, and you will have the current value for the set.

I hope this helps,

Dan
