Question
In sorting coins this evening, I came across an Alaska State Quarter, Denver mint, that does not have the artist's initials.  Is this common?

Missing letters like this are usually caused by a foreign substance (like machine grease) that gets into the die and prevents the complete striking of the coin.  I get asked about coins like this every week.

Relatively common, with low collector interest, value is about a dollar.
