Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Misprinted quarter?
Expert: PAPAJACK - 5/1/2009
QuestionHi,
I have a 2000P New Hampshire quarter that was printed off center and does
not have any ridge. The coin is circulated but in fairly good condition. Do
you think it might be worth anything?
Thanks, Susan
Answer
Hello Susan,
Error Coins are not my strong point.
How far off center is your coin?
Also the fact that it has no ridge is questionable.
If this error coin is authentic it will weigh 5.67 grams.
The struck-off-center coin is valuable when it has the full date on it and is more than 35% off center. It is one of the more common errors, but many of them are found at the mint and destroyed.
An error like this is not too high in value since the Die Tool that made it was not defective making all the coins it struck this way. And depending on how far off center it was made the value will change. (Without seeing it I can’t say it's value but likely between $5 and $10 dollars.)
As with any of the regular minting errors (such as occur on all coins of any denomination) are on the coin, off center, broad strike etc. it is worth more than face value. But it would have to be seen by an expert to be properly evaluated.
So if you let me know how far off center it is I will look up a value for you.
For more information on error coins look for the “The ERROR COIN ENCYCLOPEDIA” by Arnold Margolis.
I also want to mention COMBINED ORGANIZATION of NUMISMATIC ERROR COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION; they are the ultimate experts in the error coin field.
CONECA is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Re-punched mint marks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers just like yours to name a few.
If there any more information you require on this question just ask.
Thank You and Good Luck
