Question I sent several coins to ANACS to grade and slab and about half of them came back with cleaned near the grade. I have a lot of older large cents and draped bust coins from a dime to a dollar. If I get a grade back of VG-8 on a 1799 dollar with cleaned what is it worth when I look at a grey sheet?
Answer Michael,
940
There is no set answer to this question. The amount of discount for cleaning depends alot on the actual cleaning, and also on what kind of coin it is. If the coin is markedly discolored, or has plainly visible hairline (or worse) scratches, then it will have to be discounted alot more than if it had an old light cleaning and has re-colored nicely.
A 1799 dollar in VG lists at $940 in the CDN. An old light cleaning may only reduce its value to about $800, while a harsh cleaning may reduce it to $400.
I can tell you that discolored large cents are very difficult to sell, so will have to be discounted alot.
There is no way to tell for sure what each coin is worth -- you'd have to take them to a coin show and get offers.
