Coin and Paper Money Collecting/tiny American coin, 1802

Question
A friend of the family was an avid coin collector, and when he died this collection came to us. Everything was either already identified or easily so, except for this one "mystery coin." It is very small, just 1 1/2 millimeters in diameter.  On the front, the words "United States of America" are printed around the perimeter with the date 1802. In the middle is a six-pointed star, with the columned "shield" emblem in the middle of the star. The back bears a large calligraphic "C". In the middle of the C is a Roman numeral III. Surrounding the C are thirteen stars. I'm stumped. What is this coin?

Thanks so much for your time,
Julia

Answer
Hi Julia,

Sounds like you have a couple of facts out of place.  The coin is a Silver Three-Cent Piece.  They were produced from 1851 to 1873.  Original coins are 14mm in diameter.

It is possible you have a replica coin - I have seen them and they are very small - 1 1/2mm in diameter.  Note: That the Mint has never produced a coin under 13mm.  Also note that the Mint did not make 3 Cent pieces before 1851.

You could always replay with a scan of the coin and I'll be happy to look at it or get it checked out at a local coin dealer in your area.

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
