Coin Collecting - I am wondering about the different State quarter types
Expert: Dan Moore - 5/21/2009
Question Okay I am collecting the state quarters currently I have the P&D Mints, the Gold Mint, The P&D Gold Mints, the Platinum Mint. My question is this are there P,D,&S mints that are normal, in gold, in platinum, and in silver for all three mints with each different type so my basic question is what is every type of State Quarter that is being released and what are their differences
Answer Curt,
Each state quarter comes in only 4 varieties from the Mint :
1) regular metal P-mint
2) regular metal D-mint
3) regular metal S-mint Proof
4) silver metal S-mint Proof
Both types of S-mint proof coins have a mirror finish to them, and are issued by the Mint only in sealed 5-coin hard plastic holders.
Anything you have that is gold or platinum has had the gold or platinum plating added to it (by a private company) after the coin left the mint -- turning it into an almost worthless novelty item. I hope you didn't spend alot of money on them, like from buying them off a TV show, because they will never be worth anything.
