Question I have an 1879 cc Morgan Silver Dollar that in my opinion after comparing it to some I've seen on the Internet is in very very good condition. The problem, somebody carved their initials on the cheek of the woman on the coin, it's a good job of the initials, but is this coin now worthless?
I don't know how to grade it other than compare it to others, to me it is very good. Hardly any wear, just the initials.
Answer William,
Unfortunately, those initials really destroy the value of that coin -- too bad it was done on such a rare date coin.
Now considered a damaged coin, it is very difficult to sell this coin to a collector. It has to be very cheap to entice a buyer. What may have been a $500 coin in extra fine condition, is now worth less than $100 because of the initials.
