About Dan Moore
Expertise
My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience
I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.

Organizations I belong to :
American Numismatic Association Member #187770
Michigan State Numismatic Society Member #8255
Florida United Numismatics Member #19710

Coin Collecting - 1879 cc Morgan Silver Dollar

Expert: Dan Moore - 6/19/2009

Question
I have an 1879 cc Morgan Silver Dollar that in my opinion after comparing it to some I've seen on the Internet is in very very good condition. The problem, somebody carved their initials on the cheek of the woman on the coin, it's a good job of the initials, but is this coin now worthless?
I don't know how to grade it other than compare it to others, to me it is very good. Hardly any wear, just the initials.

Answer
William,

Unfortunately, those initials really destroy the value of that coin -- too bad it was done on such a rare date coin.

Now considered a damaged coin, it is very difficult to sell this coin to a collector.  It has to be very cheap to entice a buyer.  What may have been a $500 coin in extra fine condition, is now worth less than $100 because of the initials.

I hope this helps,

Dan
