Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1928 Morgan Peace Dollar (Not S Version)
Expert: PAPAJACK - 6/3/2009
QuestionMy father recently asked me to go through the coin collection that we
received when my grandfather died several years ago. In it, I found a 1928
Morgan Peace Dollar, which I understand is worth quite a bit of money. All of
the letters and numbers are clearly defined and easy to see, but there are a
few marks on the coin. On the front, there appear to be two tiny scratches
below the L in "Liberty" and one small scratch under the "In" in "In God We
Trust." On the back side, there appears to be one tiny scratch under the
word "one", one tiny scratch over the word "one", and two or three other
small scratches on the coin. It has been in a plastic case since it was
purchased in the 70s. I was wondering approximately how much the coin is
worth.
AnswerHello Catherine,
The question on many of these coins is whether or not it was ever cleaned. Cleaning reduces the value drastically.
The 1928 silver PEACE DOLLAR depicts Lady Liberty on the obverse. And an American Bald Eagle on the reverse with the wings folded, sitting at rest. Symbolizing peace after WWI ended.
This Philadelphia issue is valuable but collectors want them in high grade. Only high grade un-circulated coins are very valuable. The circulated specimens run from $155.00 to $400.00.
If it is from the San Francisco mint it sells much lower.
Again, if the 1928 Peace dollar is from the Philadelphia mint it usually sells for over $300 if it from San Francisco it sells for $17 to $60 depending on its state of preservation.
The mint Mark will be on the reverse (back) of the coin between the rays below the letter "0" in the word ONE (if there is a Mint Mark at all) back of the coin between the rays below the letter "0" in the word ONE (if there is a Mint Mark at all).
If you want a dealer to look at the piece for you just write and give me the nearest large Cities, some postal zip codes and telephone area codes I will refer you to an expert in your area. Make your Question Private!
