About Dan Moore
Expertise
My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience
I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.

Organizations I belong to :
American Numismatic Association Member #187770
Michigan State Numismatic Society Member #8255
Florida United Numismatics Member #19710

Coin Collecting - 1941 dime

Expert: Dan Moore - 6/5/2009

Question
I found a 1941 dime which I believe is pure silver.  On the front it has the date, a shield with something oval in the center that I cannot make out, there is an eagle standing on top of the shield and around the border is printed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA".  On the back is a woman in a wispy dress standing with one leg bent up behind her and she appears to be lighting a lamp on a short table with her right hand which she's looking down at and her left arm is bent with her hand in front of her left shoulder, "TEN CENTAVOS FILIPINAS" printed around border.
Any ideas Dan?  Thank's for your time.

Answer
Linda,

This is a coin of the Philippines, which at that time was a commonwealth of the U.S. so some of their coinage was made in Manilla and other coinage was minted within the U.S.

There were 2.5 million of these 10 centavos coins minted in 1941

Not considered rare, in average condition they are worth about a dollar.

Dan
