Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Kennedy 64 Halfs

Question
Troy,
I just read your answer to a post today. You stated that Silver Halves could be worth 3 to 6.00. Silver is at $15.00 today so I am guessing you meant to say 3 to 7.50 based on melt down.

My question is this. I just bought 4,000 1964 halves that are all uncirculated. Is it possible to have any coins in that bunch above MS 64 when they are bulked together from the mint?

Thank You for Your Time.

Answer
Hi Tim,

Yes, currently the price of an common 90% Silver Coin is totally correlated to the price of Silver per oz, plus demand.  Currently, we have been selling common 90% Half Dollars for up to $5.75 each.

Your best chance to find any CHBU (MS64) or better half dollar is going to be from original rolls.  If you have any, check a few for good quality coins.  If the coins are loose in bags it will be really tough to find any great coins.  If all the bags are original sealed bags from the U.S. Mint, you might consider opening one to check it out.  Just know that in the end you might be able to sell a sealed Mint bag for more then if its open.

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
