Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Mint Proof vs/ Mint Cad

Question
QUESTION: Can you tell me the difference between mint proof and mint clad proof?

Thanks for you're time

(looking to start a collection for my granddaughter)

ANSWER: Hi Jim,

Proof is a method of minting.  It refers to a coin that is struck multiple times in order to better bring up detail.  Proof coins will typically have a mirror surface with a cameo contrast.  A mint clad proof is a coin made of copper and nickel that is struck proof.  Any U.S. coin struck proof could be called a mint proof.

If you like proof coins we recommend proof silver state quarters and proof silver American Silver Eagles.  Also, Proof sets dating from 1950 to 1998 are a very good value.

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.

QUESTION: Thanks for your quick response. Which coins are of greater value, mint clad or silver mint proof?  Thanks again for your time.

Answer
Hi Jim,

Value is more a function of how popular an issue is and how many units were minted.  But, in general, silver proof coins are worth more than clad proof coins.

You might consider picking up a copy of the Red Book, A Guide Book of United States Coins, 2010 Edition, by R.S. Yeoman.  The soft bound spiral edition is much easier to read then the hard back.  This book will give you values, mintages, and a lot of information pertaining to all U.S. coins.

Thanks! Troy
