Question

1863 Indian Head penny
I recently acquired an 1863 Indian head penny with the back side being an advertising for AM Johnston Grocer 52 Main St Buffalo. Is it more valuable because of the advertising and is it an actual US minted coin, or simply an advertising piece? What might the value be? Thanks Paul.

Answer
Hi Paul,
Trade tokens were somewhat common in the late 1800's when small coinage was scarce and merchants would produce their own coins.
A genuine 1863 penny would only be worth about $5, however trade tokens are highly collectible and yours should bring $15-20

I hope this helped you.
