Question
I have a 2007 washington state quarter has an s under the date,it has some scratches on it. I beleive that it might be aluminum, is that possible? If so about how much would it be worth?

Answer
Crystal,

It's not aluminum, but it could be silver.  The "S" mintmark designates that it is a specially made proof coin.  These were issued only in special collector sets, both in regular copper-nickel and in silver metal.  If you examine the outer reeded edge of the coin you may see a copper stripe (like on a regular quarter).  If it has the stripe, it is made of the regular copper-nickel metal.  If it does not have the stripe, it is made from silver.

At some time, somebody would have had to have broken open the proof set this coin came in, and spent the coin.  Having been spent, it got handled, causing the scratches and prettymuch ruining the coin's collector value.  If the coin is copper-nickel, it will be worth about 50 cents.  If silver, it will be worth about $2.50

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
