Question
i have a coin that i can't find in any listing...it is a 2008-D hawaii state quarter that seems to be either clad, or a proof, but the only listings i have been able to find only include -S coins as clad or proof strikings. is this a common coin?

Answer
Will,

Without seeing it, I can only assume you come to this conclusion because the coin is unusually shiny or has no copper stripe on the outside edge, which would lead me to believe that it has been plated -- probably with silver.

There have been thousands of these coins plated and put into fancy packages to be sold to unknowing collectors who think they are actually worth something.  It's a shame.

The only genuine proof coins and silver clad proof coins will have an "S" mintmark on them -- that's the only mint that had any proof dies.  So your coin has to have been altered in some way, making it worthless to collectors.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
