Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Gold Double Eagle

Question
Hi i have recently been given a 1873 liberty $20 gold coin, i have tried to find out some information about it but don't seem to have much luck, i have looked for a mint stamp under the tail but all i can see is what looks like a blob of gold to the left directly above the letter 'N'.
I would be grateful if you could give me any background on this coin - where it was minted and how many, and have you any idea of its value?

Neil

Answer
Hi Neil,
The blob is probably the letter "S".  That would signify that the coin was minted in San Francisco.  1,040,600 were minted in that year in San Francisco.
Depending upon the condition, your coin is worth a minimum of $900 and could be worth substantially more.

I hope this helped you.
