Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Oregon Exchange Company Coin

Question
I have a $10 Oregon Exchange Company coin that was given to me by my father who was born in 1926.  I looked it up online for kicks, and saw that it may actually be worth something given that it is authentic.  I was hoping to find out HOW to get it authenticated so I know whether or not to try and put it up for sale.  It has been in a jewelry box for years, and is in pretty good condition.  Anyway, if you could let me know what I need to do, or someone to contact I would appreciate it.  I am in the Chicago area.

Answer
Hi Cristal,

You need to find a PCGS or NGC authorized dealer.  PCGS and NGC are the two most respected authentication and grading companies in the world.  We are authorized, but you might be able to find one in your area.  Most of these coins are easy to tell if they are fake.  If so, the dealer will save you some money.  The coin should feel very heavy for the size.  Anyway, it will cost you between $100 and $150 if the dealer feels it should be mailed off for certification.  You can also try replying with images of the front and back - I might be able to tell if the coin is fake just by looking at images.

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
