Question
Good Morning, I have a 1877 $50 gold coin and would like to first know it's value and or sell it at an auction price or show. Can you please send me information on this and also information on how I may list my coin for an auction or a show? Thanks, and have a beautiful life!

Answer
Gary,

Your first step would be to get it certified and encapsulated -- this will verify that it is genuine (not a modern replica) and assign a grade to it.

For info on certification, see :

www.pcgs.com

or

www.ngccoin.com

Second, due to its extreme rarity, the only way to find its value is to put it up in one of the national coin auctions, such as those put on by Heritage Auctions.

You can talk to the VP I know there :

I'm sure he can help you -- once you get the coin certified.

Good luck,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
