Question
I have a coin that on one side there is a shield with seven stripes and seven stars on it and above it is a liberty cap.  On one side of the shield is a stalk of cotton and the other side is a sugar cane, and around this is the words confederate states of america and on the bottom it says half dol..  On the reverse side it is the same except where it says half dol. it gives the date 1861.  Is there any value to this coin and what is the history behind it

Answer
Dale,

It is a modern struck fantasy coin, made to somewhat resemble the original version of the Confederate half dollar (or the Scott restrike).  However the original version had that design only on one side of the coin (the reverse), while retaining the seated liberty design on the obverse.

Your fantasy coin has a novelty value of a couple dollars.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
