Question
QUESTION: Hi Troy- I saw that you answered a question similar to mine. I have a gold coin from 1760. On one side it writes Patrona Bavariae and on the flip side it writes D.G. MAX LOS U.B.D.S.R.I.A & EL.L.L. It was my grandfathers and I was curious where it came from and the possible value?
Thank You,
Tracy

ANSWER: Hi Tracy,

I'm not sure how far back you searched.  "Patrona Bavariae is latin for "Mother of Bavarians."  The phrase refers to the patron saint of Bavaria, a province in Germany."  You may have seen that.

Is your coin quarter size?  Can you tell if there is any damage or if the coin has been cleaned in the past?  Many of these pieces come out of Jewelry.

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.

If you found this information helpful please nominate me for category expert in coins.  If coming through Los Banos, CA please feel free to look us up at Thoreson Numismatics, 947 6th Street, Los Banos, CA  93635.  209-826-0777.   Please remember that we are always in the market to buy and sell coins, currency, tokens, and medals both U.S. and World.  We are also licensed to buy scrap gold & platinum jewelry.

Thanks for the question,

QUESTION: Hi Troy-
There isn't a lot of damage... mostly just worn down a bit. I am not sure if it has been cleaned or not. It was sitting with a collection of coins for many years and I just made some time to try and research and go through some of them. It's a little bit bigger than a U.S. half dollar.
Thanks,
Tracy

Answer
Hi Tracy,

If you are sure it is a gold coin it will be worth getting it certified.  If gold, the coin will no doubt be heavier then a U.S. Half Dollar.  Certification and authentication will also help keep the coin safe for years to come.  Plus, it is nice to have an independent third party grade and positively identify the coin.  Because of possible damage it is recommended that it be sent to NCS/NGC through an authorized dealer.  It may cost upwards of $150.  If the coin is fake you will be out the money.

We are an authorized dealer or you can look for a local dealer:   http://www.ngccoin.com/services/dealer_listing.asp?state=CA

If selling, you will get the most by first getting it certified and then putting it up online for sale.

Thanks!

Troy
