Coin and Paper Money Collecting/nebraska state quarter

Question
I have just seen a Nebraska state quarter that came right from the center of a new roll from the bank (which appeared untouched)and this quarter is silver on the face, gold on the reverse....I am just a bit curious as to how this could happen.

Answer
Steve,

The reverse you are seeing is likely actually copper -- from the exposed core of an unfinished planchet.

Once in a great while, the long copper strip used to cut out coin blanks does not get its silvery-looking copper/nickel plate all the way to the end on one side (or both).  So the coin blank that gets cut out of it will be missing the clad layer on one side (or both).  The coin goes through the normal stamping process and leaves the mint with the copper core exposed.

This unfinished planchet error is actually quite popular and sought after by collectors.  Once certified (see www.pcgs.com or www.ngccoin.com), these coins regularly sell for $300 to $400 each on ebay.com

Nice find!

I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
