Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1976 Lincoln Penny

Question
My uncle recently found a 1976 Lincoln penny that appears to have the shape of the state of Missouri stamped in it along side President Lincoln's face.  The letters inside read ND (North Dakota?) even though, as I said earlier the shape matches Missouri as it is depicted on a map. Have you ever seen this before?
Thank you
Debbie

Answer
Hello Debbie,

I do come across the sets occasionally at coin shows. I know of no one currently selling or producing the state sets.

These are real cents that have been altered. I have never seen a totally complete set with all fifty states.

As you see the art work from the engraver of the state counter-stamp cut a few corners. I also see Vermont and New Hampshire used the same punch but up-side down.

There is no added collector value to it since it was modified by a private entity after it left the mint. They were made only as a novelty

The demand by true coin collectors is nonexistent at this time since they are altered one cent coins. They are only collected as a novelty item. Since your set is complete it will be easier to sell but I have not seen them sell for more than ten dollars.

Thank You and Good Luck
