Question

1987
Hi Joe,

I have a 1987 penny with a raised mark on the obverse located around the height of Lincoln's ear and just off of the back of his head. Have you seen this or heard of it before? If so, do you have any additional information?

Thank you,

Brian

Answer
HI Brian,
That was caused by a scratch in the die.  Scratches result in raised metal on the coin when the coin is struck.  This is a common error and really not worth more than face value.
