Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2001-D Vermont SILVER State Qrtr

Question
I found a State quarter this weekend that is silver.  It is a Vermont and it had the "D" stamp.  I can't not find anything that this quarter is in existence.  Is this a possible defect out of Denver?

Answer
Sorry Terri but it cannot be solid silver.  The only silver quarters were made in San Francisco, will have an "S" mintmark, and will have a mirrored cameo proof finish.

I suspect you have one of the thousands of silver plated quarters that have been sold on TV and other places, which are unfortunately worthless.

Weigh it -- a silver quarter will weigh 6.25 grams -- a silver plated one will weigh about 5.7 grams.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
