Coin and Paper Money Collecting/2004-P Texas quarter

Question
I have a 2004 Texas quarter with a P mint mark that doesn't appear to have the copper alloy in it. You cannot see the copper streak on the side at all. It is all silver in color. I have searched online to find info without any luck. I have found out that proof sets all have S mint marks. Can you help? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Tara,
I've noticed that the clad edge is not always 50/50 copper to copper-nickel. Many appear to be mostly copper on the edge with just a thin sliver of white. I haven't seen too many that are mostly copper-nickel, but it's entirely possible you have a couple quarters struck on copper-nickel, rather than a clad, planchet. As such it would have value as a mint error.
This is something you may want to bring to the attention of the people at CONECA, who specialize in all sorts of errors and varieties.
I apologize that you had to wait so long for a response, the expert you originally posed this question to had passed it along just today.
Thanks for the question and best of luck with your coins! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
