Question
I have a huge coin that says "Deutschlands Kaiser Paar 1829-1879 on the front.  On the back it says " Goldenen Hoshzeitsfeier Des Kaisers Wilhelm I Im der Kaiser in Augusta 11 Jun 1878"  It is a big coin - almost 2 1/4 inches across.

Answer
Hi Keith,
Sounds like you have a large medal, rather than a coin. The translation commemorates the Golden (50th) anniversary of the rule of Kaiser Wilhelm of Prussia. Your medal is most likely from the German State of Prussia, which was the biggest state under Wilhelm's rule.
If your medal is silver and in good condition you can expect $100-$150 on the current market. The prices would be a bit higher if European bidders were included.
For a medal that is made of copper, brass or bronze, the value will be about half of that for the silver version.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
