Question
How much would a Deutscher Kaiser Konig V. Preussen A.  1888 coin be worth. It is a 20 mark and in near perfect condition?

Answer
Hi Karla,
There are actually three different variations for the Prussian 20 mark gold coin of this year. In uncirculated condition a professionally graded coin ranges from $300 to $400 on today's market, depending on the variety. However, a near perfect, or AU (almost uncirculated) and ungraded example drops down to right around gold bullion value, plus 10% in the best case scenario. Since this coin has nearly a quarter ounce of actual gold weight, that translates to about $250.
Fakes are also known to exist, the reference weight for your coin is 7.9-8.0 grams.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
