Question
Would like to know some information regarding a coing marked on the front Freie Stadt Frankfurt and on the back just marked 3 1/2 gulden 2 thaler 1844.  Any help would be great thanks

Answer
Hi Stas,
You've got the largest type coin minted by the German state of Frankfurt am Main. An authentic coin should weigh right around 37 grams, though a circulated coin will be a gram or two lighter.
There are two varieties: one with a crowned eagle obverse, which ranges from $60 to $400+ depending on condition and one with a port city scene, which ranges from $90 to $600+. Both varieties are made of .900 purity silver and have a combined mintage of 196,000.
Thanks for the question and best of luck with your coin! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
