Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Gold State Quarters

Question
I have about 40 gold state quarters. Are they worth anything or just the $0.25, if so what can I do with them?

Answer
Hello Qiana,

Thank You for selecting me for this answer.

Since these are modified coins, the value is questionable. It will still be worth a quarter.

The amount of collectability for any altered or plated coin is negotiable only to a buyer that is looking for that collectable.

Most coin collectors are purists and will pay more than face value for the common copper-nickel as made by the mint with no wear or scratches. I have seen non-numismatists buy the gold plated coins as yours and the only other people buying them would purchase the set for the novelty of them, but pay less than the original price.

Recently I have seen Gold Plated 1999 S.B.A.’s at a coin show packaged with a Sacagawea and presidential Gold Colored Dollar coins. But no true Coin collectors were buying them since the sets had a plated coin.

These colored, Hallmarked, re-stamped or (like yours) gold plated coins are a gimmick. And therefore have no added value.

I am not saying not to collect these items. Enjoy them for what they are. But time has proven they will not usually sell for the price people pay for them on the secondary market. As with any Collectable it may become popular with Non-Coin-Collectors one day and sell for more.

Good Luck
