Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Tiny Indian Head Cent

Question
I have a 1903 Indian head that looks exactly like my 1888 cent, except it is about the size of Lincoln's head on any penny. Can you tell me where this may have come from and if it has any monetary value?

Thanks

Crystal

Answer
Hi Crystal,
You have a mini-coin. These are usually issued in sets of all the denominations from a certain period. Yours would have originally been part of such a set. As an individual coin, it may be worth a dollar or two to an interested collector. Being a novelty piece there is not much value in such miniatures. If you searched "miniature coins" on eBay you'll see some of these sets for the later coin types.
The exception is antique miniatures, known as "play money", which can sometimes be very valuable for a scarce piece.
If you ask a follow-up with an attached picture of your coin I can discern if it's a modern or antique miniature.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
