Question

Unknown Penny
Hi,

I picked this coin up in a lot of others. It is about the same size as an Indian Head penny and is dated 1863 and on the back I can see a 1 and the letters "SON" and "SD" are visible. I can not find it in the Redbook and in 1863 the Indian penny was the cent piece. I believe it is copper. Any help would be appreciated. If you need a better picture let me know.

Thank you.

Answer
Alex,

You have a civil war token.  These were made by private companies and sold to merchants to use for making change for their customers, due to the extreme shortage of coins in that time period caused by hoarding.

In the poor condition shown, it's worth a dollar or less.
