Question
My mother has left behind an extensive coin collection. I have no idea of it's value, however my brother is offering me a 6 piece half pound silver .999 set (proof) (6 coins dated 1993) in a walnut box as my share of the collection. Can you tell me about how much is it worth. Would I be better off just dividing up coins some other way?

Hi Judy,

The medal you are referring to is ether 6oz's or 8oz's (Troy weight) depending on how it was minted.  The paper work might say if it is 8oz's pure .999 fine silver.  If so, take the price of Silver X 8oz and you have your value  (At this writing Silver is just over $14 per ounce).  You can expect to receive 80% to 100% of its value if you take it to a dealer.  Of course, this is completly assuming that the items you are talking about are not pure silver clad or 100 mil Silver plated repo's (which have almost zero actual silver).  If unsure, you should have a local dealer take a look at them.  I hope this helps!  

Please remember to never clean coins or medals, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
