Question

1940 coin
I have acquired a small, thick coin with the words: Deutsches Reich. On one side there is an eagle with a swastika within a circle in his talons & the year 1940. On the reverse side, it is exactly the same, but with the year 1942. I find it strange that there are 2 years on it and no stamped value.
Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Bub,
You have a machined combination of two coin halves. There is a thin seam around either the edge or the rim, your picture has slight evidence of such a seam on the thick edge. Typically these were done by hollowing out one coin, then rolling the other in a press so that its diameter decreases enough to fit into the hollowed out coin.
Things like this are fairly common, though this is the first one I've seen made from these zinc Nazi coins. There are no such two-sided coins that are actual mint errors.
As far as value, it's worth around $5 to someone who collects "crafted" coin items such as this.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
