Coin and Paper Money Collecting/foreign coin

Question
We found a foreign coin in our change machine about the size of a quarter with the words:Beatrix Koninginder Nederlanden an a female profile on one side and a series of boxes and a 1G 1982 on the other side.....any ideas or whether I can take it to a coin collector in Michigan (Traverse City)?

Answer
Hi Leslie,
You've got a Netherlands 1 gulden, which would have been the Dutch equivalent to our quarter of the same period. It's a nice item to give as a gift to someone interested in world history or geography, but there is no significant monetary value to the modern coin types such as this.
Can't say that I know any collectors in your area, since I've never been to MI.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Experience

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
