Question
hi Dmitry,
i have a french silver coin in good condition measuring 20mm across - on the head side it's printed "republique francais " with E A OUDINEF at the base of the neck.
on the flip side it says "50 cents - 1850 " with "liberte egalite fraternite " round the edge.
would you have any information on this coin, please, and is it valuable ?

Answer
Hi Don,
Your French coin is made of .900 purity silver and should weigh right around 2.5 grams.
There are three different mint marks: A, BB and K. These would be located at the bottom below "50 cent".
The A mint is more common and market prices run from about $5 for an average circulated coin to well over $100 for a nice uncirculated example.
The rare BB and K mint marks run from $50 to $500+ in the same grades.
Thanks for the question and best of luck with your coin! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
