Answer

BavThaler
Hi Tracey,
The design you describe sounds like a silver, not gold, coin from the German State of Bavaria. The larger thaler and half thaler coins had the words "PATRONA BAVARIAE", the gold coins from this period did not.
Is this a large coin, the size of a silver half dollar or dollar? It should be similar to the one I've attached a picture of.
It's not uncommon to find coins that have been gold plated or gilded or even medals that are designed after coins.
If you can post a follow-up with a picture I can give you more specific info as to the value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
