Coin and Paper Money Collecting/independently minted coin?

Question
I have a coin dated 1863 that has a picture of a flag with 14 stars encircling it on the front with the caption "THE FLAG OF OUR UNION".  On the back of the coin it has three rings of writing, the outside ring says: "IF ANYONE ATTEMPTS TO TEAR IT DOWN", second ring: "**SHOOT HIM**ON THE SPOT", third ring (center) DIX.  Can you please tell me what kind of coin this is.  Someone told me that it might be from an independent mint used in those days?  Thank you for your help.

Hi Tammy,
This is a Civil War token, I've attached a photo which I believe is what you have. These were often minted locally by smaller companies rather than the big mints. Depending on condition, your token is worth anywhere from $5 in poor condition to well over $100 in top grade. There are also some variations known, which may add to or subtract from the value.
Thanks for the question and best of luck with your token! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
